There was a time when anyone wanting to try a good Indian restaurant in Cambridge would simply get pointed in the direction of Mill Road. And rightly so! The road, thanks to its diverse culture, numerous independent restaurants, and its many many Indians was a no brainer. It was absolutely crammed with decent places to eat. From the top of my head there were at least six Indians to chose from, the most notable being The Golden Curry, Kohinoor, and the Curry Queen. Three well established Indians which have been around for a very long time. They are the kind of places which always offer a great experience and a decent curry. Sadly though, times have changed and those six have now dwindled. The Royal Standard down the other end of Mill Road was eventually turned in to an Indian restaurant. I managed to visit the place three or four times in the brief time it was open but sadly it closed down soon after, which was a damn shame because I considered it the best place do...

A few weeks ago I noticed a new Indian restaurant on Mill Road. This was a huge relief for me because of the sudden decline in Indians on Cambridge's mini "curry mile" has now reached HALF what it was a few years ago. Last year Royal Spice closed down, which was one of my favourite Indians on Mill Road. Only a month later Chutney Joe's closed, leaving only the Curry Queen, Kohinoor and Golden Spice left.  I couldn't figure out how Prana was an actual restaurant because its so small. At first glance, it looks like a take-away only establishment, but after my meal at The Golden Curry today I decided to pop in and have a chat. They were kind enough to show me around and the restaurant has a huge downstairs area. The claim there is 50 seats!  I need to give this place a try! I walked in to The Golden Curry on Mill Road the other month with a friend and was shocked to find it covered in sheets and a couple of very confused painters starring at me. Needless to say they were having some work done as I hadnt noticed that the sign had been taken down out the front too. I was slightly annoyed at the time, mainly at myself for being in my usual state of obliviousness and walking straight in to a closed restaurant.  I was also excited though because I have always liked The Golden Curry yet have noticed over the years that it has started to look a little worse for wear, I couldnt wait to see what they were going to do with it.  Tonight I finally got to see what they have envisioned. They have gone for a modest look on the outside of the restaurant as seen above, with a brown coat of paint instead of the old traditional green (shown below). India House proves once again why its one of the best Indians in town. I havent been since 2009, which is surprising considering how much I loved the place last time and I was incredibly pleased to see that the place has managed to keep up to the same high standard as I remember it. The first thing that impressed me about this place was the incredibly beautiful Tudor building which over looks the Mill Pond. I was able to eat my meal while watching the punts. This is something which to my knowledge isnt offered by any over Indian in the city.  The staff were incredibly warm and welcoming. They couldnt do enough for us. The menu was well laid out and reasonably priced. My arrival somewhat delayed to the venue i arrived to the greeting of a waiter who directed to the table, my first impressions of the place were confused. This was mainly due to the interior layout, i couldn't see the majority of the resturant from its entrance and was only aware of the table from the waiters directions. This also led to a second problem i had with the place, the use of space inside. The tables were cramped against the walls and did not give way for much room with higher amounts of people. I figure however this is a minor problem when one comes to the view of food and quality of service, so i leave these problems up for debate. A very fast and friendly service from the Sylhet Tandoori in Ely tonight. My food was ready within 30 mins and the staff were incredibly warm and chatty. Sadly the food didnt meet the same standards though with the Vindaloo having incredibly dry and flavourless chicken. It was very mild too, even though it was requested hot on order. Everything you don't want from a Vindaloo. The Saag Aloo was delicious and very generous with the spinach. Even though this was mixed with the curry I still didnt have any left over for the next day which implies small/average portions. The poppadoms were slightly above average but were sadly accompanied by a horrible lime pickle and mango chutney, even though the onion mix was very generous and quite tasty. Currently the Sylhet is sitting in the shadow of its next door neighbour, the Montaz, which still remains (in my opinion) the no1 Indian in the city of Ely so far!
